Abstract
The effect of the magnetic field configuration on the formation of ion acou stic shocks has been investigated experimentally and through numerical solu tions of the fluid equations. The tendency for compressive pulses to steepe n into shocks is enhanced if the pulses travel into a configuration of conv erging magnetic field geometry. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics.
