A method for the in vitro pollination of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) ovu
les was developed. The purpose was to avoid self-incompatibility after in v
itro self-pollination of ovules isolated from flower buds before anthesis a
nd from open flower heads. Seedlings were obtained at a low percentage (0.7
6%), and the results were explained in terms of pollen viability, pollen ge
rmination on the ovule, embryogenesis studies and ploidy analysis.
