This paper addresses the need for a universal mastering format as a result
of international acceptance of DTC broadcasting and the ensuing demand for
content in various media. With the FCC adoption of the ATSC standard and gr
owing acceptance of DTV internationally, dramatic changes will be seen in t
he post-production of programming content. Nonlinear disk-based finishing s
ystems offer a flexible solution. Market needs, system requirements, and se
veral possible post-reduction workflows are examined.
