Superconducting power links (SUPERPOLIs) will offer the opportunity for low
-loss power transmission of high nominal currents and fault current limitat
ion (FCL) simultaneously in one single device. They will find their applica
tions as generator out-lines or in the medium voltage power distribution gr
id. As a significant step towards the GV A-class three-phase application, t
he first aim of the project is the demonstration of a one-phase functional
model of length 2 m for 20 kV(rms). 2 kA(rms)/5 kA(rms) operation; it will
include the development of two alternative low-ac-loss conductor designs su
itable for current limitation: a low-cost composite tubular Bi-2212 conduct
or with moderate J(c) and a coated tubular Y-123 conductor, presenting a ve
ry high J(c).
