Abstract
A model describing a turbulent vortex breakdown in terms of the transition from right-handed helical slender vortex to left-handed annular vortex is p roposed. The results offer a new approach to the phenomenon of vortex break down considered from the standpoint of spontaneous changes in the topology and symmetry of the vorticity field.
