The performance of a very compact and low-cost Raman system has been examin
ed in detail. We have attempted to use it for both qualitative identificati
ons and quantitative analyses of mixtures. As a part of the evaluation, wt
have attempted to devise compensation routines when these were needed. We c
onclude that this system can be used for a limited range of qualitative app
lications, but that the quantitative performance is inadequate. The princip
al problems originated in laser fluctuations and in the appearance of spect
ral artifacts when the laser was operated.
