Abstract
Following Mather et al. (1999) we describe a concept for a future space mis sion called SPECS, a spatial and spectral Michelson interferometer with Hub ble Telescope-class angular resolution and sensitivity that operates in the far infrared and submillimeter spectral range. SPECS enables detailed stud ies of the physical conditions in high-redshift galaxies and has the potent ial to revolutionize our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution.
