A hypothesis has been put forward, which accounts for a narrow specifi
city of pearl mussel larvae occurring in a few host fish species. The
pearl mussel larvae produce species specific factors stimulating migra
tion of the fish gill epithelium cells. As a result, an epithelial cys
t is formed. This cyst protects the larvae from immune rejection. Poss
ible mechanisms underlying host fish replacement during phylogenesis h
ave also been considered.
