S. Wolter et al., Improvement of kidney function after long-term preterminal kidney insufficiency in infravesical obstruction, MONATS KIND, 148(5), 2000, pp. 479-481
Background: In early childhood in the majority of cases due to posterior ur
ethral valves (PUV), lower urinary tract obstructions, in early childhood l
ead to high pressure and damage to the upper urinary tract. In spite of ear
ly urological intervention 25-60% of the boys with PUV develop chronic rena
l insufficiency. Complete restitution of renal function is very uncommon. C
ase report: We report a case of a boy now 13 years old, in whom a urethral
stricture was diagnosed only at the age of 7 years as the cause of chronic
preterminal renal insufficiency. Six years after urethrotomia interna the b
oy has no complaints, good renal function, no voiding dysfunction and his h
eight approaches the 25th percentile. Discussion: Recovery of renal functio
n usually requires early relief of the obstruction and decompression of the
upper urinary tract. However, this case report shows impressively that in
spite of long-term preterminal renal insufficiency, restitution can be obse
rved after treatment of bladder outlet obstruction.
