The generalized momentum distribution eta((p) over right arrow, (Q) over ri
ght arrow) of finite nuclei is studied. Tractable analytical expressions an
derived using a harmonic oscillator basis and numerical results are presen
ted for the closed-shell nuclei O-16 and Ca-40 in the case that (p) over ri
ght arrow is parallel to (Q) over right arrow. Our results are compared wit
h those for an infinite Fermi gas of appropriate wave number and with those
for a model nuclear matter derived via microscopic calculations including
dynamical correlations. The method is expected to reproduce the main featur
es of the quantity eta((p) over right arrow, (Q) over right arrow) stemming
from finite nuclear size and Fermi statistics, being reliable at certain r
