Abstract
Relatively little previous research has investigated the mechanisms by whic h safety climate affects safety behavior. The current study examined the ef fects of general organizational climate on safety climate and safety perfor mance. As expected, general organizational climate exerted a significant im pact on safety climate, and safety climate in turn was related to self-repo rts of compliance with safety regulations and procedures as well as partici pation in safety-related activities within the workplace. The effect of gen eral organizational climate on safety performance was mediated by safety cl imate, while the effect of safety climate on safety performance was partial ly mediated by safety knowledge and motivation.
