The effects of N-H-Y coupling on localized vibration modes around the excit
ations in MX compounds are investigated. It is shown that the localized mod
es in an isolated chain will be separated into two chains due to an N-H-Y c
oupling. Some new modes of lattice vibration are found, which are achieved
by the N-H-Y coupling. These results can qualitatively account for the freq
uency shifts of some modes observed in the Raman and infrared absorption sp
ectra. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
