The angular velocity is an absolute or intrinsic property of a rigid body;
that is, all points of a rotating rigid body have the same angular velocity
. This fact is well known, but its proof is often erroneous. Here we correc
t two faulty proofs of this result, one in Goldstein's famous textbook and
the other published nearly 30 years ago in this journal. (C) 2000 American
