This paper reviews the development of the semiconductor laser-a key compone nt of optical communications. If discusses the tremendous advances in mater ials and reliability, describes the progress in laser structures, performan ce, and applications, and looks forward to the role of the laser in the nex t phase of the telecommunications revolution.
