Abstract
This paper describes the development of fiber optics technology-an essentia l element of the telecommunications revolution-and reviews the remarkable p rogress in fiber design and fabrication, optical amplifiers, UV-induced fib er gratings, novel microstructured optical fibers, and integrated optics. T he paper also explores the limits of optical fiber channel capacity and con siders the future of optical communications.
