The ultrasound irradiation of aqueous solutions of PtCl62- was found to pro
duce colloidal platinum of about 3 nm in diameter. The presence of aliphati
c alcohols significantly enhanced the reduction process. It is shown that t
he extent of reduction of PtCl62- in the presence of alcohol is directly re
lated to the Gibbs surface excess of the alcohol at the air-water interface
. The significance of this is discussed in relation to ultrasound induced c
avitation in solution. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
