A relatively small ophiolitic complex in the southern Peloponnese (Agelona)
is composed mainly of serpentinites, amphibolites and gabbros. Diagnostic
Carnian-Norian radiolaria were extracted from a few metres of red-brownish
radiolarian cherts overlying gabbros. The contact between radiolarites and
gabbros seems to be stratigraphic. These Late Triassic deep-sea sediments w
ould represent accumulation of radiolarian ooze on a rugged Tethyan oceanic
floor situated near a medio-oceanic ridge. (C) 2000 Academie des sciences
