This review summarizes recent research into populations at risk for substan
ce abuse. From a primarily sociodemographic perspective, evidence regarding
the relationship between substance abuse and socioeconomic status/educatio
n, unemployment/underemployment, ethnicity, age (younger and older populati
ons), homelessness, imprisonment, and participation in military service is
examined. Methodological strengths and weaknesses of these studies are iden
