M. Sanpei et al., PERFORMANCE OF RESISTIVE PLATE COUNTER WITH NON-OZONE DEPLETION FREON, IEEE transactions on nuclear science, 44(3), 1997, pp. 752-756
The standard gas mixture used for RPCs contains similar to 60% Ar, sim
ilar to 40% isoC(4)H(10) and several percent of CF3Br(Haron1301) as qu
enching agent. CF3Br is known to destroy the atmospheric ozone layer.
For this reason its use is discouraged, and prohibited by law in the n
ear future. C2F6(FC11G) and C2H2F4(HFC134A) seem to be an ideal candid
ate from an environment point of view since its ozone depletion potent
ial is very low. We present the results of a test performance on RPC(g
lass) operating with non-ozone depletion freon gas and butane-silver.
