The stiction force of crowned, stepped, and padded pico sliders is investig
ated as a function of surface roughness, environmental conditions, and lubr
icant thickness. Contact start-stop tests were performed at ambient and hot
-wet conditions (50 degrees C, 80% relative humidity), and the effect of sl
ider design on the magnitude of the stiction force and the coefficient of s
tiction was examined. The results show that the stiction force of padded an
d stepped sliders is smaller than that of typical subambient pressure slide
rs.
