The new technique of electrodilatometry, known to be very sensitive to H-bo
nded systems, has been used to study a binary mixtures of cyclohexanol with
n-heptane at 298K over a concentration range 0.400-1.00 mole fraction (F).
The magnitude of R varies from 0.711x10(-18) m(2)/ V-2 (at F=0.400) to 20.
8x10(-18) m(2)/V-2 (at F=1.00). Also R remains unchanged in the range F=0.4
00-0.599, above the latter concentration R increases rapidly. The sign of R
is positive for all values indicating that the volume is increased in the
presence of the applied fields. Due to some similarities between cyclohexan
ol and the much studied and better known t-pentanol, a comparison between t
hem could be made which leads to the proposal that for F < 0.599, cyclic mu
ltimers (e.g. trimers) dominate with the formation of ring stacking structu
re. At F > 0.599, a new type of associates is formed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Sci
