Rydberg spectra of platinum and yttrium atoms have been studied by the atom
ic beam double-resonance pulsed-held ionization detection technique. Five R
ydberg series of platinum, 5d(9)nd 5/2 [1/2](1), 5d(9)nd 5/2 [3/2](1,2), 5d
(9)nd 5/2 [5/2](2,3) 5d(9)nd 5/2[7/2](3) and 5d(9)ns 5/2[5/2](2,3), and thr
ee Rydberg series of yttrium, 5s(2)nd D-2(3/2), 5s(2)nd D-2(5/2) and 5s(2)n
s S-2(1/2), converging to the ground states of Pt+ (5d(9) D-2(5/2)) and Y(5s(2) S-1(0)), respectively, have been observed and analysed. The first io
nization potentials of platinum and yttrium atoms have been determined to b
e IPPt = 72 257.8 +/- 0.8 cm(-1) and IPY = 50 148.6 +/- 0.8 cm(-1),respecti
vely. Several unidentified lines in the spectrum of yttrium have also been
observed.
