lA simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of
vanadium(v) has been developed using 6-chloro-3-hydroxy-2-[2'-(5'-methylfur
yl)]-4H-chromen-4-one as a complexing ligand. The dark yellow (1 : 1) colou
red species extracted into chloroform from 0.3 M CH3COOH medium shows lambd
a(max) at 432 nm. The method is free from the interference of a large numbe
r of elements especially the platinum metals. It obeys Beer's law in the ra
nge of 0.2-1.4 mu g ml(-1) V-V with molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensit
ivity of 3.98 x 10(4) dm(3) mol(-1) cm(-1) and 0.0012 mu g cm(-2), respecti
vely. Analysis of various synthetic and technical samples has been carried
out with satisfactory and reproducible results.
