Abstract
The interaction of the alpha(2)-adrenoceptor agonists clonidine and xylazin e with the alpha(1)-aduenoceptors in the mt and rabbit aortas was investiga ted In preparations preconstructed with phenylephrine (10(-6) M), cumulativ e addition of clonidine and xylazine induced concentration-related vasodila tation in the presence of the alpha(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine an d the P-blocker propranolol. Neither clonidine nor xylazine treatment inhib ited 5-HT- and KCI-induced vasoconstriction. It is concluded that alpha(1)- agonists have affinity for alpha(1)-adrenoceptors in rat and rabbit aortas.
