We demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing the so-called 'double-dark' sch
eme of four-level atomic coherence to obtain strong laser gain in the ultra
-violet and vacuum ultra-violet. Furthermore, we show a new technique for e
liminating Doppler broadening in a large class of multi-level (greater than
or equal to 4) schemes. A specific application of these ideas to cw lasing
