The photon-number statistics of damped higher-order optical solitons are st
udied numerically, using cumulant-expansion techniques in Gaussian approxim
ation. The analysis is given in both the time domain and the frequency doma
in. Introducing appropriate filtering, it is shown that the photon-number n
oise can be strongly nonclassically correlated to each other. In particular
, filter optimization is performed in order to observe strong sub-Poissonia
n statistics and strong nonclassical correlations. (C) 2000 Elsevier Scienc
