The ytterbium compound YbPtIn has been studied by means of single-crystal x
-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity, el
ectrical resistivity, and magnetoresistivity measurements, performed down t
o 100 mK in fields up to 14 T. The magnetic properties of YbPtIn an governe
d by the presence of the magnetic moments of Yb3+ ions, which order magneti
cally at low temperatures. Strongly enhanced electronic specific heat, high
ly reduced magnetic entropy, and characteristic Kondo-like behavior of the
resistivity and the magnetoresistivity allow classifying YbPtIn as a heavy-
fermion system.
