A level scheme is presented for I-111(53), populated by the Ni-58(Ni-58, al
pha p) reaction. A backed-target experiment, at a low beam energy of 210 Me
V, was performed using the JUROSPHERE spectrometer, while a thin-target exp
eriment at 250 MeV was performed using the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in conj
unction with the MICROBALL charged-particle detector array. The new level s
cheme fits well the systematics of light iodine nuclei and provides evidenc
e for a terminating band at the highest spins. Low-lying transitions previo
usly assigned to I-111 could not be confirmed.
