Photolysis, using a visible radiation, of diphthalocyanine complexes o
f Nd-III, Dy-III and Lu-III ([Pc(-2>(NdPc)-Pc-III(-2)](-), [Pc(-2)(DyP
c)-Pc-III(-2)](-) and [Pc(-2)(LuPc)-Pc-III(-2)](-), respectively) in t
he presence of pentachlorophenol (PCP) or SO2 results in the one-elect
ron oxidation of the diphthalocyanine species to Pc(-1)(NdPc)-Pc-III(-
2), Pc(-1)(DyPc)-Pc-III(-2) and Pc(-2)(LuPc)-Pc-III(-2), respectively.
The PCP is reductively dechlorinated to tetra- and trichlorophenols.
The quantum yields for the photosensitization reactions are of the ord
er 10(-4). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
