The binary Al-V phase diagram was reinvestigated in the composition range b
etween 0 and 50 at.% V using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), X-ray Pow
der Diffraction (XRD) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA). The lattice
parameters of 5 intermediate compounds were determined and the phase bounda
ries of the various phases were established by EPMA. The shape of the liqui
dus curve could be fixed up to a vanadium content of 40 at.% and the reacti
on temperatures of 6 invariant reactions were derived from DTA. results. Th
e new phase diagram shows significant deviations from previous versions, es
pecially in the melting temperatures of the compounds Al3V and Al8V5 and th
e course of the liquidus line.
