Abstract
Dynamic regulation of tight junction function is fundamental to many physio logic processes. Disruption of tight junction function drastically alters p aracellular permeability and is a hallmark of many pathologic states. Recen tly, an increasing number of cytokines have been shown to influence tight j unction function both in vitro and in vivo. Cytokine-induced effects on tig ht junction barrier function have also been correlated with effects on intr insic tight junction proteins and the associated actin cytoskeleton. The ai m of this article is to review studies relating to the effects of cytokines on tight junction function and structure. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier S cience B.V. All rights reserved.
