Y. Matsumura et al., The electrochemically induced Hofmann rearrangement and its comparison with the classic Hofmann rearrangement, ELECTR ACT, 45(18), 2000, pp. 3011-3020
The conditions suitable for the electrochemically induced (E-I) Hofmann rea
rrangement were scrutinized, and the E-I Hofmann rearrangement was compared
with the classic Hofmann rearrangement. The E-I Hofmann rearrangement usua
lly afforded reliable results with respect to the yields of the desired car
bamates and the side products. Furthermore, by utilizing the advantage of t
he E-I Hofmann rearrangement which could be carried out in new solvent syst
ems containing a variety of alcohols under mild conditions (neutral), a var
iety of carbamates possessing various functional groups were prepared. (C)
