The object of the examinations we performed was to establish the impact of
climatic conditions governing the growth of a cotton plant on the supermole
cular structure of cotton. Long-staple cottons originating from various agr
o-climatic areas were examined, in particular the following cottons: the Eg
ypt-Giza, Sudan Baracat, India MCU-5 and USA Pima. The following examinatio
ns were performed: wide-angle (WAXS) and small-angle (SAXS) x- ray diffract
ion; examination of the cross section of cotton fibres with the use of JSM-
15 JEOL scanning microscope, together with examinations performed tinder in
fra-red conditions. On the basis of WAXS and SAXS examinations the degree o
f crystallisation, the size of crystallites, and the fibre texture were det
ermined. Insignificant differences in the structures of the examined sample
s were recorded.
