The magnetization and electrical resistivity of a single crystal of (Fe0.98
Ru0.02)(2)P have been measured as a function of temperature from 5 to 300 K
and in magnetic fields up to 5.5 T. The compound orders antiferromagnetica
lly at T-N = 135 K and exhibits field-induced transitions to the ferromagne
tic state in both principal directions. At 5 K, the magnetic moment along t
he c-axis is 2.9 mu(B)/f.u. after the transition. The transitions are accom
panied by a giant magnetoresistance effect (Delta p/p > 25%), indicating a
considerable reconstruction of the Fermi surface. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science
