Use of magnetic films for miniaturization of planar inductors operating at
ultra-high frequencies is reviewed. Materials and design aspects determinin
g the efficiency of the devices are analyzed. Mechanisms involved in magnet
ic dissipation and their role in limiting the device operation frequency ra
nge and quality factor are discussed. Typical inductor geometries are consi
dered. A magnetically sandwiched strip inductor is argued to hold a promise
for GHz applications. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
