Abstract
A case-study method is proposed to determine service load from fracture sur
face striations. Although it is well known that striation spacing relates t
o crack growth rate, it has been virtually impossible to determine maximum
and minimum loads under service loading conditions, or to define stress rat
io R from an analysis of the striation spacing. This paper presents a new m
ethod of measuring striation height and width by means of a laser microscop
