Abstract
We show that the compound La1.2Ca1.8Mn2O7 does not form with layered Sr3Ti2 O7-type structure as reported by Kamenev et al. [Phys. Rev. B 56, R12 688 ( 1997)]. Detailed analysis of the powder x-ray diffraction pattern of this c ompound (synthesized by using the solid-state method) by Rietveld method sh ows that it forms a multiphase mixture comprising hole-doped perovskite man ganates (La1-xCaxMnO3) as the majority phases and CaO as the minority phase .
