This article presents a model for conceptualizing psychopathology designed
to assist practitioners in evaluating patients and applying effective treat
ment plans. The model describes psychopathology as a function of (a) level
of ego organization and (b) character style. Two adjunctive variables are d
iscussed that augment treatment planning through (a) evaluation of the indi
vidual's current level of adaptive functioning and (b) confirmation of the
diagnostic conceptualization and treatment approach by evaluation of the pr
imary dynamic or conflict. These 2 major dimensions and 2 adjunctive variab
les are examined in relation to theoretical description of psychological fu
nctioning and procedures for assessment and treatment considerations, respe
ctively. Key guidelines for the treatment of prototypical disorders are pre
sented.
