Mj. Philippe et al., Deformation mechanisms and mechanical behaviour of titanium beta alloys from Ti20V to Ti20V6Al. Experimental and predicted results, REV METALL, 97(5), 2000, pp. 649
In the present work we have studied alloys of beta-titanium (in all cases t
hese were single phase prior to plastic deformation) having compositions Ti
20VXAl where X was Varied in the range 0 to 6%. The alloys containing up to
4% aluminium deform principally by (332) <113> twinning associated with a
phase transformation to the phase omega(s). Crystallographic slip intervene
s later, preferentially on planes of the type (110). Alloys containing 5 %
or more aluminium deform principally by crystallographic slip. The choice o
f active deformation modes is confirmed by the good prediction of the cold
rolling texture. Correlations between the deformation processes and the mec
hanical properties confirm that there is a sound basis for optimizing the m
echanical behaviour of these alloys.
