The transitional economies of Central Europe have given way to a rapid emer
gence of the private sector This article examines the attempts to privatize
the Czech Republic's health care system from both a social and economic pe
rspective. Provided is a general discussion of the mass privatization of st
are-owned enterprises in the Czech Republic, an analysis of the previous he
alth system, and an explanation of the transformation process to a privatiz
ed health care system. Finally, a discussion of outcomes and an assessment
of these outcomes follow.
