Abstract
Carlos Luis Spegazzini (1858-1926) was a leading figure in Argentinian natu ral history, mainly recognized for his mycological and vascular plant studi es. information concerning Spegazzini's travels and his botanical work focu sing on vascular plants, including his specimens and publications, is provi ded. The collecting expeditions of Spegazzini and collaborators in Argentin a are summarized. The identification of his typic and non-typic materials i s frequently complicated by the lack or sparcity of label information. Speg azzini published ca. 100 papers on vascular plants, mostly in Argentinian j ournals, describing ca. 1000 new taxa. A list of the new genera, species, a nd infraspecific taxa described by Spegazzini is provided. Spegazzini was p rofessor at the University of La Plata and Buenos Aires in Argentina, curat or of the herbarium of the National Department of Agriculture, first head o f the herbarium of Museo de La Plata, and founder of an arboretum and an in stitute of mycology in La Plata city.
