The poetic oe uvre of Ted Hughes, of which the New Selected Poems 1957-1994
are the condensed form, is implicitly organized in a cosmology. The poet h
as never expressed it in a direct way, except, partly, in the work he once
did with Peter Brook for Orghast. By making use of some of the information
published by A.C.H. Smith in his book on the subject, it is possible to ske
tch the outlines of a theological system that is the silent architecture of
Hughes' poetry, with particular reference to individual poems.
