Abstract
In this paper, me present a JPEG-compliant method for the efficient compres sion of compound documents using variable quantization. Based on the DCT ac tivity of each 8 x 8 block, our scheme automatically adjusts the quantizati on scaling factors so that text blocks are compressed at higher quality tha n image blocks. Results from three different quantization mappings are also reported.
