Abstract
The preparation of platelet concentrates by automated apheresis started in the early 1970s. Originally intended to increase the amount of platelets fr om selected (HLA compatible) donors to supply HLA-immunized patients, plate letpheresis has permanently expanded. Further development of plateletpheres is is described. Considering medical and economical perspectives, actual tr ends and possible future developments of platetetpheresis are discussed.
