This article was developed front the premise that prior work experience pro
vides students with a competitive advantage in the job market since this ex
perience is looked upon favorably by recruiters of college graduates for en
try level positions. The article focuses on the characteristics of prior wo
rk experience and their relationship with effective socialization. Hypothes
es were tested using survey data from 131 college graduates participating i
n a Career Development Program. The findings provide insight into the dynam
ics of prior work experience and effective socialization, however they rais
e questions regarding the "benefits" of prior work experience.
