Abstract
The taxonomy of the creeping water bugs belonging to the genera Sagocoris a nd Aptinocoris, which are end(:mic to New Guinea and nearby islands, is rev ised. The following new species are described: Sagocaris intermedius from c entral Irian Jaya, Sagocoris irianus from northern Irian Jaya, :Sagocoris f lavinotum from northern Irian Jaya, Aptinocoris sogeri from southeastern Pa pua New Guinea, Aptinocoris minutus from northern Papua New Guinea, Aptinoc oris boikiki from northeastern Papua New Guinea, and Aptinocoris ziwa from northern Irian Jaya. The following new generic assignments are proposed (ne w combinations given second): Sagocoris fenneri = Aptinocoris fenneri; Sago coris sedlaceki = Aptinocoris sedlaceki; Sagocoris cheesmanae = Aptinocaris cheesmanae; Quadricoris asymmetrica = Sagocoris asymmetricus. The followin g new synonyms are proposed (junior synonyms listed first): Quadricoris La Rivers = Sagocoris Montandon; 'Truncocoris La Rivers = Aptinocoris Montando n; Sagocoris browni La Rivers = Aptinocoris papuus Montandon. The supergene ra Margodes and Margallus proposed by La Rivers are considered invalid name s since they refer to a taxonomic category that has no official status unde r the present Code. Illustrations are provided for the male genital structu res and female pregenital structures for all Sagocoris and Aptinocoris spec ies, along with maps detailing the distributions of these species within Ne w Guinea.
