Abstract
Kaolinite particle orientations are estimated from transmission electr on micrographs of compacted samples. The angular distribution of parti cle orientations shows a peak width at half height which decreases as the logarithm of the applied pressure. This results is compared with t he classical soil mechanics relation: e = A + B.log(sigma) between th e void ratio e and the effective pressure sigma.
