Abstract
An accurate fully vectorial wave analysis to calculate the propagation char acteristics and field distribution of open dielectric waveguides and optica l integrated circuits is presented. Based on the periodic repetition concer t and using an equivalent network model, a method to analyze wave propagati on in these guides is developed, which is able to take the simultaneous pre sence of mixed polarizations into account. Compared with conventional appro aches like mode matching as well as with other numerical methods, the prese nted three-dimensional (3D) method shows individual advantages like accurac y, simplicity, and numerical efficiency. To show both validity and usefulne ss of this approach. some fundamental structures are investigated and the o btained numerical results are presented.
