Abstract
A recent multichannel seismic line collected during the PRISMED cruise (March 1993) across the western branch of the Mediterranean Ridge (Ce ntral Mediterranean) allows interpretation of this feature as a tecton o-sedimentary accretionary prism. Seismic processing however clearly d emonstrates that most of the tectonic shortening is due to thrusting a nd piling up of Messinian evaporite sediments. The main decollement le vel could be located near the basis of Messinian evaporites.
