In the central and western Betics, two brittle normal fault systems di
smembered the previous Alpujarride allochthonous metamorphic sheets du
ring the Miocene. An interference pattern of the two extension systems
that can be described as a chocolate-tablet mega-structure took place
, the resultant subordinate units being separated in both N-S and ENE-
WSW directions. On the basis of the present position of these extensio
n units and, in particular, the constraints of their metamorphic regis
ter, it is possible to infer a total of five major allochtonous tecton
ic units related to the former nappe-stacking of the Alpujarride compl
ex.
